We Shoot People - Night photo walk #3 - City of London
12th November 2014 - 0 comments
Week 3 of the series of night street photography walks with the Meetup group WE SHOOT PEOPLE !

This week the event took us to The City of London. Meeting at Bank station just outside The Royal Bank of England on a cold November evening. The City of London is a great location with a lot of historic architecture, light and side alleys that make for some very noir images. From there I took them to the infamous Leadenhall Market area, Lloyds building and than onto Liverpool Street to finish off the evening with a pub social. See some of the Meetup group's uploaded images from this walk.

Here's my favourite shot taken from the evening....

On the next walk #4 on 26th November 2014 I have arranged a night photo walk to Covent Garden, Seven dials & Leicester Square.
We Shoot People - Night photo walk #2 - Southbank
05th November 2014 - 0 comments
Week 2 of the series of night street photography walks with the Meetup group WE SHOOT PEOPLE !

This week the event took us to Southbank, London. Meeting at Waterloo station (under the clock!), we set off to Southbank to do some shooting. Very challenging lighting and cold made this a tough gig, but we battled on for the scheduled walk until we couldn't feel our fingers and ended up in the nearest cafe Nero for some hot chocs and our social. See some of the Meetup group's uploaded images here from this walk.

Next week, walk #3 takes us to the City! Should be a good one.

A few of my shots...

1-2-1 Street Photography Workshop
05th October 2014 - 0 comments
Street Photography workshop

I spent the afternoon with a new student teaching them some street photography. For my tuition workshops I prefer 1-2-1 photo walks as I can really personalise the workshop to their exact wants and needs in learning. Helen was a great student - asking lots of questions and getting stuck in. We covered many areas of learning from overcoming her fear of getting shouted at, getting people to identify with her photos, improving her compositions to the varying styles of street such as portraiture to more compositional shots and making stronger images overall.

Its always good to see a student improve within a workshop. Helen got closer to subjects with each image and her confidence grew as the workshop went on.

I spent the afternoon with the immensely talented, award winning street photographer Linda Wisdom. We talked about everything from overcoming your fear of being shouted at, to getting others to identify with your images, to geometry in your scene.

I've not taken much street photography in my time but it appeals to me, perhaps because as a psychology grad I've always been interested in human behaviour.

Today has reinvigorated me to pound the street's at lunchtime scanning the scene for potential street blips. Who know's, I might even be brave enough to get in close.

Thanks for a fabulous afternoon shooting street Linda. Lots of fun

Want to schedule a 1-2-1 Street photography workshop? You can book here. There is a 15% discount for first time students!

When an artist paints one of your photographs
23rd September 2014 - 0 comments
When an artist paints one of your photographs

I received an email from a Facebook friend Lucy who is an artist (painter) a while ago asking if she could paint one of my street photography images. Of course I said yes as I was really intrigued as to what their interpretation of one of my street photography images would look like in paint.

I sent them a jpeg of the photo they were interested in painting, went for lunch. By the time I had finished my lunch she had emailed to say the painting was done!!

Anyway, below is the painting impression of my image! We have since named the man in the picture 'Mr Pret' for obvious reasons!

Here is the original photo:

and the painting!
When Sociology Influences Street Photography
09th September 2014 - 0 comments
I received this interesting email in my inbox the other day from Melanie, a lady who had visited my website and was interested in buying some prints of mine.

It was a unique email in that she is a professional sociologist who was curious about my images. I have copied her email and my response below…

“Linda, your pictures are simply wonderful, and I am definitely going to buy some prints. However, I was wondering about the background stories to the photographs, as I would love to know the context of your shoots. There are so many that I think are absolutely evocative about time, place and person – that sounds rather trite, but as a sociologist, I’m very interested in what caught your eye and why, even if you don’t personally know your subjects story – I understand that the picture denotes the story, just interested in whether there was any interaction?”

The London Photo Festival returns in October (16th - 18th), Borough/London Bridge - the theme being 'Landscape' photography. I am a big fan of urban landscape and so I am participating two of my New York City urban shots at the exhibition, well just because I love NYC and these photos bring back great memories of my trip. I must return there soon!

If you are a member of my Meetup page WE SHOOT PEOPLE then I shall be organising a group social meeting event around this exhibition. Date to be confirmed closer to the time.

In the meantime, check out the London Photo Festival website for further details.

Hammersmith London / The Royal Opera House Live
15th July 2014 - 0 comments
Hammersmith London hosted a free live big screening of La Boheme from The Royal Opera House into Lyric Square. I was hired as photographer for this event. The brief from Hammersmith London was to capture the essence of the event, the social atmosphere and elements of the amazing crowd that turned up to watch it on a great summers evening. The Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham and special guests were also in attendance as special guests.

Hammersmith London / Light The Fuse Theatre
18th June 2014 - 0 comments
I did some events photography for Hammersmith London at Theatre In The Square (Lyric Square). Light The Fuse, a new theatre production company put on a great outdoor performance called FULL STOP, that all takes place by a bus stop! I was asked to get some photos of the performance but also capture the life around Hammersmith's infamous Lyric Square. Great fun taking photos for this outdoor event.

Rinse IO featured photographer: Stories behind photography
10th June 2014 - 0 comments
I am a featured photographer on the Rinse IO website : Stories behind photography series. My short story called Londonium about street photography and London. Check it out!

"If you wish to have a just notion of the magnitude of this city, you must not be satisfied with seeing its great streets and squares, but must survey the innumerable little lanes and courts. It is not in the showy evolutions of buildings, but in the multiplicity of human habitations which are crowded together, that the wonderful immensity of London consists."
A little interview I did with Street Photography London Collective ...
10th June 2014 - 0 comments
Check out a little interview I did with the Street Photography London blog this week...

Can you identify for us the main reason you shoot street work?

As mentioned, I have a interest in people, but I am also quite an empathetic person and can read others pretty quickly. I started in the portraiture style of street, but soon progressed into being more creative with multiple elements such as with light play, geometry, POVs, urban scenes, etc into my photos.....
