Pigalle Paris street photography

20th September 2016

Pigalle, Paris | 2016

Paris’ Pigalle is an epicenter of debauchery with door to door sex shops, peep shows, strip clubs, cabarets, and many other, unpublishable X-rated adventures on the main boulevards. In terms of seediness, Pigalle might take the cake. Very touristy though because of Moulin Rouge windmill.

I scouted Pigalle during the day and then I went back there under the cover of darkess with my camera, as I saw some potential photo wise, esp. with all the neon signs & lights etc. There were many of these narrow, quiet, side passage hotels in the area just like this one I thought were cool to photograph. I was thinking I could never live in this area, never mind stay in a hotel here just for a few days.

As I was getting some shots, I heard the voices of some little kids talking behind me. The older sis said 'Excusez-moi' and I let them pass. I guessed they were brother and sister. As I took some shots, I wondered where they were going hand in hand, alone in this sleazy part of town, and why they kept looking back. But it wasn't me they were looking at....

A few seconds later, I heard another adult female voice 'Excusez-moi' it was their mother, carrying some heavy bags I let her pass by. I remember as she did, her starring at me for a few seconds. I couldn't tell if it was a look of despair, uneasiness and/or sadness but I realised as the kids walked into the hotel, that is where they all lived.
